ChexSystems is a specialized consumer reporting agency that gathers data related to checking and savings accounts. It functions similarly to how Experian collects information on credit accounts. Your ChexSystems report may include details about closed accounts, bounced checks, overdrawn accounts, and your history of ordering and cashing checks.
Banks and credit unions often use your ChexSystems report and score during their review process when you apply for a new account. Negative items, such as unpaid overdrafts or bounced checks, can lead to your application being declined. While some banks offer second chance accounts, it can be challenging to qualify for many accounts until your ChexSystems report is cleaned up.
Adding a security freeze to your ChexSystems report restricts access and helps protect you from identity fraud. If your report is frozen, it becomes more difficult for someone else to open a bank account using your personal information, thereby preventing check fraud and money laundering.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows you to add security freezes to any of your consumer reports created by reporting agencies. Besides ChexSystems, you can also freeze and unfreeze your Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion credit profiles for free.
You can freeze and unfreeze your ChexSystems report online, by mail, or by phone. Here’s how to do it online:
Create an account (optional): While not required, registering for a ChexSystems account can be beneficial. It allows you to add and remove security freezes, update personal information, request your report and score, and file disputes.
Enter your personal information: If you didn’t create an account, go to the “Place a Security Freeze” page and enter your name, date of birth, Social Security number, address, and identification number from your driver’s license, state, or military ID. Agree to the terms and conditions and complete the CAPTCHA to confirm you’re not a robot.
Submit your request: Once you click submit, ChexSystems will freeze your report within 24 hours.
Wait for your PIN: ChexSystems will mail you a personal identification number (PIN). Keep this PIN safe as you’ll need it to create an online account, thaw your report, or unfreeze your report. If you need a replacement PIN and didn’t create an account, you’ll have to wait for ChexSystems to mail you a new one.
Using your account: Log in to your account to remove a security freeze, thaw your report, or schedule a thaw. Confirm your request using your PIN. If you don’t have your PIN, you can request a new one to be sent to your online portal.
Using your PIN and SSN: Alternatively, go to the “Manage Your Security Freeze” page and enter your PIN and Social Security number. Submit your information to remove or thaw the security freeze, or schedule a thaw for a future date.
Credit report monitoring tools, such as Experian’s free credit monitoring, can alert you when someone tries to open a credit account in your name. These tools are crucial for keeping your identity safe but do not monitor bank accounts since banking information isn’t part of your credit history.
Even if you freeze your ChexSystems report, consider signing up for an identity protection program that monitors additional financial accounts, including bank accounts. These programs can alert you when someone tries to open an account in your name. You can explore this with a seven-day free trial of Experian IdentityWorks℠ Premium or Family.
